LINCOLN

Luminous is an emerging rag tag, playful, eclectic community of seekers and Christians with a passion for social justice and a thirst for finding new and contemporary ways of exploring spirituality and worshipping God.

We aim to be

Contemporary

positively and critically engaged in contemporary cultures, drawing on the past but not bound by it, exploring new ways of being and doing  Jesus centred community

Compassionate

passionate about helping  each other love ourselves, one another and the wider world through nurture, pastoral care and pursuing social justice and equality 

Contemplative

open to contemporary and ancient well springs, helping members find sustainable life rhythms that balance work, prayer, play, relationships and rest

Creative

imaginative and resourceful in harnessing human creativity in worship, prophetic witness and pastoral care

Companions

providing opportunities for fellowship, usually involving food, mindful that companions are those who share bread.

Luminous is not about cliqueness, forming a holy huddle for private members. We want to be an open community, open to people whether they have a strong faith commitment or are just browsing.

Nor is luminous about competing  with other churches for existing members. While some luminous  members are also members of other churches we don’t want to take them away, but help resource them for their life in their own churches. We want luminous to help (and sometimes challenge) local churches in their work, not compete with them.

And we hope that luminous will attract people who are not involved in other churches, that we will become church for and with them.

Like BeAttitude, Agent 2015 and InheritanZ015, the story of luminous is closely tied in with the story of the U2charist Project Lincoln. Influenced and inspired by the Emerging Church and New Monastic movements, members of the U2charist organising group wanted to come together with others to explore what it meant to be a contemporary community, not just an organising group. So luminous was born. We still run U2charist services, but do other stuff as well! These are some of the possible future developments:

Monthly meal

perhaps a meal out, perhaps a meal in, either way, an opportunity for members to enjoy each other’s company and grow together.

Worship

we don’t just do U2charists, we will be exploring and creating other forms of worship together .

Inside out church

we don’t want to be cosily locked away from the rest of the world in beautiful buildings, but find creative engaging ways of being church and doing church out on the streets.
